Book #1 is titled The Gunslinger Born and actually begins where Book #4 (Wizard and Glass) of King's original series falls.
Roland, having just bested his teacher and earned the title of the youngest-ever Gunslinger, leads his life-long friends and gunslinger-apprentices Alain and Cuthbert into the town of Mejis. The young men travel and work under the guise of being counters for the Affiliation, but their true task is much more daunting and could prove deadly for all involved. Clouding their mission even further is the ill-fated Susan who has stolen Roland's heart.
Book #2, The Long Road Home follows the trio on their trip back to their barony.
Roland, grieving the loss of Susan, gets caught up in the wizard's orb he is supposed to deliver to his father. His friends are now burdened with tending to his inanimate body while fending off wolves and a posse of Big Coffin Hunters who mean to kill them.
Even if you've never read Stephen King's Dark Tower series, you can thoroughly enjoy these graphic novels. The essence of the story has been captured brilliantly even though these were not written by Stephen King.
The real gem, however, is the stunning artwork on these pages. I've just recently gotten into graphic novels as a whole, and I have to admit that I am now hooked and anxiously looking forward to the rest in the series.
The books are collaboratively written and illustrated for Marvel by Robin Furth, Peter David, Jae Lee and Richard Isanove.
